{Pregnancy} What Fruit is My Baby?

Perhaps one of the strangest things about being pregnant in this world of technology is all the pregnancy information that is out there. The last time I was pregnant, 5 years ago, I didn't have an Iphone, Pinterest, or Mom forums. I actually had a copy of "What to Expect When Your Expecting" and I read it religiously each week. I purposely didn't read ahead because I wanted to be surprised. Which is funny, because it was my 2nd baby. (But who really remembers their first pregnancy anyways? Most of us just wander through the first pregnancy in a sea of pink and blue booties and pregnancy glow.)

This time around I have downloaded some free pregnancy apps that give me a week by week explanation of my pregnancy. One of the first things that I noticed was that in all my technologically current pregnancy materials, my baby's growth is being compared to a fruit/vegetable.

Does anyone else seem to find this strange? I have no memory of fruit pictures with my prior pregnancies. The doctor did give me a "How Your Baby Grows" magazine with detailed pictures of womb like fetuses but that is about it. Plus when you flip through these fruit/vegetable size examples week by week, they just don't make any sense.

I mean, last week (23 weeks), the example given was a mango. (Not that it matters but I am allergic to mangoes and they make me itch just looking at them.) I bet that unless you have grown up in Florida, California or any other tropical island you may never have even seen a mango.

Then this week, the baby is about the size of an ear of corn. Ummm, Could their be two more possibly different looking foods? A mango is round and fat while an ear of corn is long and slender.

Don't even get me started about next week, a rutabaga. It's a good thing that they offer a scrolling pictoral for me because there are a few of these veggie fruits I hadn't even heard of. 

Now I am just trying to stop myself from thinking about this ear of corn floating around my belly. 

Yes, mango and corn are clearly a little different but it's weeks 26 and 27 that is the most bizarre.

Although the cauliflower does remind me of the Cabbage Patch Kids which is slightly reassuring. No matter how hard I try, I still can not comprehend how these fruit/vegetable choices are supposed to help us preggo mamas understand the size of our growing baby. Do you?
