Got Books?

Today was national Read Across America day. Reading is a huge part of our lives and I absolutely can't control myself when it comes to buying children's books. I try my best to purchase books at yard sales, used book stores or through my son's Scholastic book orders at school (teacher gets free supplies/books for the class) and when my kids are all grown up and moved on to finer literature, I plan to donate the ones that have survived all the "love" to our local children's hospital.

While I would love to tell you that our favorite books are the classics, I usually find that my son chooses a Lego book or Sponge Bob book as his evening choices.  Of course we have read all the classic fairytales but when given the option he always chooses the commercially promoted books. Which is fine, the most important thing is that he is reading.

Lu's favorite books are the ones that have bright colors and animals in them.  She also has a fondness for Dora the Explorer and Elmo.  She keeps two books in her crib and I often find her reading in her bed with her feet propped up.  She "babbles" her stories to her self and slowly her literacy skills are emerging.

There are so many wonderful children's books being published today and it makes me wonder what my readers favorite authors and titles might be? Here is a list of our favorite reads right now! I would love for you to share yours too.

So what are you reading????

Eating Out with Food Allergies

Over the past 2 years our family has become experts at negotiating menu's at various chain restaurants.  Up until recently we have had our few regular restaurants where we knew what foods were safe for Lu (or when I was still nursing, me) to eat. I have a few staples that I know are typically egg, dairy and soy free and which foods are ususally "safe."

Typically wait staff are more than happy to check with the manager or the kitchen to help us determine what items would be "safe" for her. However, I always feel bad asking a slew of questions to the staff. Yes, I know that I shouldn't feel bad but I do, it is an extra burden on the wait/kitchen staff for a $3.95 kids meal.

However, recently, we have noticed that more and more restaurants are printing an allergy friendly list or making their lists available on line.  This past weekend we were pleasantly surprised to find out that one of our favorite restaurants, Red Lobster, now has an allergy menu.

While I understand how difficult it is to create a detailed listing, it does frustrate me that so many companies are creating only gluten free menus. It seems that companies are bowing to the pressure from the Celiac communities but not the allergy communities.  I hope that we see this trend begin to change as companies realize that they are missing out on customers.

Here is a list of Allergy "Friendly" restaurants and links to their menus.  Almost all of the menus have a disclaimers that they can not be held responsible so I would still ask questions.

I am sorry if these are only regional to the midwest...it's where we live.

Our Old Favorites:

Red Robin
*Great Menu, updated regularly and divided by allergen.

Oh Charley's
*Huge binder that they will bring to the table. Doesn't seem updated regularly. Does list ingredients.

MiMi's Cafe
*Huge binder they bring to the table.

A couple of quicker restaurants:

Steak & Shake

Five Guys Burgers

Panera
*Ask the management staff for the complete listing of allergens. It is in a huge binder.

Some New Ones:

Red Lobster
Love the new menu!

TGI Friday's
Has a new fold out laminated menu with icons listed next to each item. Unfortunately, the menu does not separate what products contain an allergen and which is a possible cross contamination.  Very good attempt but doesn't work for us.

Applebee's
Great new menu! Separated out by each allergy and is on a separate sheet. Really like this one.  Applebee's was on our "banned" list because their management was completely unwilling to assist me with an order once.

City BBQ
Great listing and they keep it right by the register.

Restaurants we are still waiting for:

Olive Garden
Smokey Bones
PF Changs
Max & Erma's
Longhorn *has a GF but no allergy menu
Roosters

If you know of any that I overlooked, please post a note!  Maybe it is one we have avoided because we didn't know they had an allergy menu!

Happy & Safe Dining!

Praise & Giveaway: Jump Start Online Adventure

Choosing quality online educational games and activities is very important to me. I want to make sure that my children are playing games that are entertaining as well as educational and that is why I jumped at the opportunity to review Knowledge Adventure's JumpStart.com

The Jump Start website is a virtual world full of what seems to be an infinite amount of games, activities, and adventures geared at children ages 3 through 5th grade. From the main page you enter the main

There are three "lands," each containing a different theme, different activities and learning modules.  StoryLand is aimed at 3-5 year olds, AdventureLand and MarineLand, is designed for kids in kindergarten to second grade and FutureLand fits children in 3rd to 5th grade . There is also an Enchanted Sanctuary, where kids can hatch and raise their own dragons!

Eph was really excited to play JumpStart and absolutely would not allow me to help him or give him any directions the first few times he played.  Since this is not a virtual world and I do not have it set up for him to interact with real people, I allowed him his freedom to explore.

Each game/activity has a spoken clear set of directions. I really like that you have to listen to the directions completely before you can start an activity. With Eph's ADHD, listening to and following directions is very difficult.  The directions are clear and easy to follow.  Occasionally he would have to ask me something to clarify but most of the times those were computer related questions as to if he needs to use the mouse or the keyboard.

One thing that is still very perplexing to Eph is that he needs to "earn" stars in order to gain access to or do some of the activities.  Because he is impulsive and has ADHD, he often will spend his stars unwisely (or unknowingly) and then be frustrated that he can't do something.  I have tried (unsuccessfully) to explain to him that he needs to save his stars and he needs to play games that are on his level so that he earns more stars. Fortunately, there are so many opportunities to earn stars that it doesn't take him long to rack a few more up.

I love this video because it shows him intently focused on completing the activity. This level of focus is hard to come by sometimes.

On one of the days that we were exploring JumpStart together I had Eph go into Storyland.  StoryLand was much to easy for him, but it allowed him some time to really learn how control his character in the different worlds.  It also let him earn some easy stars. I love that StoryLand uses only the mouse, which is easier for him to navigate as a lefty.

Eph's favorite game is the MathBlaster, even though the activities were a little too difficult for him. This is one that we can do together and I can call out the equation and the answer.

Overall, we are really enjoying all that JumpStart has to offer in their online game.  I am very impressed with the creativity, activities and learning experiences that Eph gets each time that he logs into the program. There seems to be a never ending amount of activities and Knowledge Adventure does a great job of keeping the game fresh and new, like for February they have had a whole Valentine's Day theme running throughout the main section. I would completely recommend JumpStart for anyone looking for quality online educational games.
